What Qualifications Do You Need to Become a Teacher? 

The options above all come under the umbrella of education, but if your desire is to become a qualified Teacher in a primary or secondary school, then there are various qualifications that you need to obtain. 

In England and Wales, you must gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which can be achieved through an Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programme. This programme can be studied as part of an accredited university degree or as a separate course, and it will take around a year to complete.  

Once successful, you will be awarded QTS and will gain the status of Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT), enabling you to complete an induction year. 

To enrol on Teacher training in England, you will need to meet certain entry requirements, which consist of: 

• Degree – A degree or equivalent at a grade of 2:2 or above is a necessity. For secondary school teaching, the degree should be related to the subject that you want to teach. If this is not the case, it may be possible to enrol on a subject knowledge enhancement course 
• GCSEs – To become a Teacher, you will require at least a grade C/4 in GCSE Maths and English, or Functional Skills equivalent 
• Declarations and Checks – You will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check as well as declare any previous convictions
