We’ve had Thailand, Spain, and other European locations. Now, the latest hotspot in terms of dental tourism for Bits is in the Middle East, with ‘Turkey Teeth’ being the latest place to get affordable dentistry.
While everyone is looking for ways to save money due to rising living costs, many Brits are now having to pay twice to rectify problems caused by their overseas dental work.
A recent survey found that nine out of 10 Dentists in the UK are now treating patients who have had their dental treatment abroad.
This is echoed by the British Dental Association (BDA), which discovered that over 90% of UK Dentists have examined patients who’d previously travelled abroad for dental services, with 86% treating those who have experienced problems from that treatment.
Despite many celebrities and TikTok stars boasting their bright white smiles thanks to these treatments, UK Dentists are concerned by the dental tourism trend.
A BDA-led survey estimated the percentages of the risks involved:
- The highest single risk factor at 86% – Failing or failed treatment
- 76% – Pain
- 72% – Poorly executed treatment
It also revealed the treatments that Dentists claimed they had to fix:
- 87% – Dentists claimed crowns require the most follow-up treatment
- 85% – Dentists claimed implants were the most problematic
With 51% of Dentists reporting the cost to repair the damage from these treatments comes in at over £1000, following this trend is proving to be a costly mistake.
Eddie Crouch, British Dental Associated Chair, claimed: “The reality is rarely as simple as it appears on Instagram. Sadly, many UK Dentists are now picking up the pieces when things go wrong.”
