About your Courses

Functional Skills courses are designed to give you the key practical skills you need to use maths in your everyday life. This course allows you to study level 2 maths, and should you decide to take the exams you can gain nationally recognised GCSE alternative qualifications.

Functional Skills qualifications can help to improve your job prospects as well as get onto college and university courses. Additionally, you will develop skills that will give you greater confidence in work and at home whether that’s creating a budget or writing a formal letter.

You will learn everything from addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, to how to read charts and tables, and how to predict outcomes using probability.

This course option also provides you with a specialist tutor who will guide you through your learning. You will receive an hour of one-to-one time with your tutor, focussed on your unique needs and additional learning in areas you find difficult. You will be given an email address for your tutor who will be available for support during office hours.

In addition, you will have tutor-marked assignments and a mock exam, all with feedback from your specialist tutor identifying any areas where you need further revision.

When you have completed the course material you’ll be ready to sit your online exam. Exams are not included in this bundle, but are available to purchase separately.

If you take the exam, gaining your Functional Skills Level 2 in maths means you’ll have a qualification that is the equivalent to a grade C or above at GCSE (new grade 4).  This means that you are able to demonstrate your ability to use maths at this level. This is essential for certain careers – such as teaching – so your employment prospects open up considerably.

Functional Skills maths includes sections on:

  • Using numbers – This section covers everything from addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to decimals, fractions and percentages. You’ll look at how to solve real problems using these skills, including using ratios in recipes and in work, making decisions about purchases or working out whether your bills are correct. All of the skills you learn will be tested by quizzes at the end of each section and a tutor-marked assignment, ensuring that you are ready to sit your final exam, should you choose to do so.
  • Measure, shape and space – This section contains a wide range of topics from time to speed, distance to area and weight to temperature. You’ll look at how to solve problems involving time to plan your day-to-day or work life, and how to use your understanding of shape and area to do anything from reading a map to planning a house renovation. Our quizzes and tutor-marked assignment will check that you’re able to use these skills in different situations, making sure that you’re ready for your final exam, should you choose to do so.
  • Handling Data – This section looks at working with data. You’ll learn about charts and graphs, how to summarise and present information that you’ve found, and how to understand information that other people are sharing with you. You’ll also look at probability and how likely certain things are to happen. You’ll learn how to spot patterns and see how even data and statistics can be biased. Our quizzes on topics such as averages, probability and interpreting charts and graphs will help you to make sure you’re ready for your tutor-marked assignment and final exam, should you choose to take it.

Once you’ve passed all tutor-marked assignments you will be ready to take your mock exam.  The mock exam is marked by your tutor and feedback on readiness for the exam and any recommended revision areas are given.

Exams are available to purchase separately.
