About Your Course

This animal licensing inspector Level 3 award gives you the knowledge required to carry out the role safely and in accordance with animal welfare legislation.

The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018 sets out the responsibilities of local authorities in England to license activities and establishments that involve animals.

Whether this is animal breeding or providing boarding services for cats and dogs. As a licensing inspector, you make sure that businesses and licensed individuals are operating in line with this legislation. And if you find they aren’t, take appropriate action.

During this course, you’ll cover the legislation and become familiar with the different roles and responsibilities it makes provision for. You will also learn how to assess animal welfare and know what steps or remedial action you need to take to ensure the welfare of the animal or animals.

This course includes a practical unit that needs to be evidenced to meet Defra requirements for licensing training and you will gather your own evidence of the tasks carried out.

Assessment Requirements

You will be assessed via a combination of video and photo submissions.           

Evidence of Practical Competency Required

Learners need to gather their own evidence of practical tasks carried out.

Certification Timeframe

Learners can expect their certification within 6 months of completing the course, following the (EQA) External Quality Assurance of assessment.

This Level 3 award consists of three units:

Unit 1: Legislation in Animal Care

Upon completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand legislation relating to animal welfare
  • Understand the impact of legislation on animal welfare
  • Know the requirements for companion animal accommodation
  • Understand the responsibilities of an animal licensing inspector/animal welfare officer under legislation

Unit 2: Inspecting Animal Care Establishments

Upon completion of this unit you will:

  • Be able to provide guidance on policies and procedures relating to animal care establishments
  • Be able to understand requirements for staff training, knowledge and onsite supervision
  • Understand provision of information, advice and guidance at animal care establishments

Unit 3: Skills in Practical Animal Care

Upon completion of this unit, you will:

  • Know how to carry out a risk assessment in animal care establishments
  • Be able to handle and restrain animals in animal care establishments
  • Be able to carry out analysis of animal accommodation
  • Be able to observe animal behaviour
  • Be able to health check animals

You will be required to create a portfolio of evidence, that you will need to submit to gain your qualification.
