About your Diploma
This Level 3 Award in Birds of Prey Studies will give you the opportunity to explore the diversity of birds of prey species found throughout the UK alongside learning about their biology and welfare.
This Award qualification is suitable if you are interested in learning more about UK birds of prey diversity, care and conservation. It will also be of interest if you already work or volunteer with birds.
The Birds of Prey Award also offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a 1-day practical experience with Wye Valley Falconry in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside. The 1-day experience will be led by a falconer with over 14 years of experience handling and flying a diverse variety of birds of prey.
The 1-day practical experience provides an excellent opportunity to put the learning material from the Level 3 Award into practice, and to learn about topics such as -

- Bird health
- Exercise and enrichment
- Usage of various equipment
- Bird law
- Bird care and welfare
- Transporting and safe handling
- Bird tracking using technology

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but learners must be aged 16 or over.

You have 24 months to complete your course.
Placement or Practical required
This course does not include a mandatory placement. However, learners have the opportunity to complete an optional placement that is offered at Wye Valley Falconry, based in Herefordshire. Please note, minimum group sizes apply.

Learners can do the practical at any point once the thresholds are met.
Certification Timeframe
Learners can expect their certification within 6 months of completing the course, following the (EQA) External Quality Assurance of assessment.
All course fees, inclusive of all payment plans including our Premium Credit Limited option, must be settled before certification can be ordered.

Learning is delivered across 2 units covering the following topics:
- Birds of Prey
- Care and welfare of birds of prey
Unit 1: Birds of Prey
On completion of this unit you will:
- Know different birds of prey commonly found in the wild and in captivity.
- Know the habitats of and threats facing UK birds of prey.
- Understand the basic biology of birds of prey.
Unit 2: Care and welfare of birds of prey
On completion of this unit you will:
- Know health care, common diseases and basic welfare needs of birds of prey.
- Understand nutritional requirements of birds of prey.
- Know situations when birds of prey may need emergency care and plan for dealing with them.
- Understand rehabilitation and re-release processes for birds of prey.
To gain the Level 3 Award in Birds of Prey Studies you must achieve 10 credits.
Each unit will be assessed by a range of in-depth theory assessments. Students will need to show sufficient evidence that they have the required knowledge, skills and understanding of the assessment criteria.
When are you assessed?
Once you have successfully completed each unit assessment you will receive your certificate of completion alongside your qualification.
