About your Diploma

This interesting and informative qualification will give you the opportunity to learn all about operating a digital camera. You will explore image composition techniques which will help your photos to really stand out.
 
The course looks at the importance of both indoor and outdoor lighting and covers photo editing and post production. During the course you will explore how to capture professional quality photos of companion animals. As part of the course, you will have the opportunity to produce a pet photography portfolio.

Starting your Career

This Level 3 Award in Pet Photography qualification has been designed to provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to work in the professional pet photography industry.
 
On completion of the qualification, you will have the knowledge and skills to move into employment or self-employment in pet portrait photography and related areas. You may also choose to progress on to further qualifications in related subjects such as the Level 3 Award in Wildlife Photography.
 

One Day Practical Placement

You will have the benefit of attending a one-day practical placement at the Worcester Animal Shelter, where you will go through a range of different techniques. The purpose of the placement is to give you an idea of the practical elements involved in pet photography.

The day will cover the following subjects:

  • Composition (rule of 3rds), colour balance and camera settings
  • Studio lighting
  • Studio controlled environment and props
  • Client and animal engagement
  • Shutter speed, ISO, depth of field and exposure

You will also be encouraged to draw upon storytelling techniques and coming up with creative ways to connect emotionally with the client through your photography.

Qualification: Pet Photography Level 3 Award (RQF)

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded the Level 3 Award in Pet Photography. You will gain a Level 3 Qualification.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but learners must be aged 16 or over.

You have 24 months to complete your course.

Assessement requirements

Learners must upload their photography portfolio in order to be assessed.

Placement or Practical required

This course includes a mandatory 2 day practical placement at Jimmy's Farm. Please note, minimum group sizes apply.

If placement or practical required, when?

Learners can complete the practical training at any point, once full payment for the course has been made and the group size is met. Minimum of 5 learners per group.

Certification Timeframe

Learners can expect their certification within 6 months of completing the course, following the (EQA) External Quality Assurance of assessment.

All course fees, inclusive of all payment plans including our Premium Credit Limited option, must be settled before certification can be ordered.

*You will have access to the course for 24 months.

Over the course of two units, you will learn the necessary theory on the following topics:

  • Operating a digital camera
  • Photographic techniques
  • Photo editing and post production
  • Pet photography

Unit 1: Digital Pet Photography

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Know the components of a digital camera
  • Understand how the basic controls and parameters work
  • Be able to apply photographic techniques
  • Understand image composition
  • Understand camera usage in animal photography

Unit 2: Photography Techniques and Pet Engagement

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Be familiar with pet photographing techniques
  • Know how to create professional lighting settings both inside and outside the studio 
  • Understand the basics of photo editing and postproduction
  • Be familiar with ethics when working with animals
  • Be able to produce a pet photography portfolio

Each unit will be assessed by a range of in-depth theory assessments. Students will need to show sufficient evidence that they have the required knowledge, skills and understanding of the assessment criteria. 

When are you assessed?

Once you have successfully completed each unit assessment you will receive your certificate of completion alongside your qualification.
